Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has won the PFA player of the year award after a brilliant premier league season.
The Dutch international has played a major role in Liverpool’s title-challenging championship this year, a battle that looks on to go till the last day in the campaign. This performance certainly didn’t go unnoticed as his fellow players voted him as the competition’s best.
Raheem Sterling, who has scored 17 goals this season for Manchester City, was voted the young player of the year. He was also in the tie for the major award, along with his City team-mates Bernado Silva and Sergio Aguero.
Van Dijk who joined Liverpool in January 2018 is the first center back to win the award since John Terry in the year 2005.
The towering defender has helped his team keep 19 clean sheets this season and has also scored 3 goals. Last season, Liverpool conceded 38 goals, but this season their defense has been breached only 20 times – giving them the best record in the division.
This is the second year in a row that a Liverpool player has won the award, with Mohamed Salah winning the award 12 months ago.
