The champions league final is finally here and this time in an all English affair its two of the most unlikely team that plays in the final. It is not wrong to say that it’s the battle between the comeback kings as both the teams have their fair share of comebacks throughout the tournament.
Liverpool arrives at the final as the favorites, they have previously won this competition five times; an achievement only Milan and Real Madrid could better. They were the finalist of the last season and they finished the season a single point of the champions Manchester City in the Premier League.
On the other hand, Tottenham last time they were in any kind of European final it was way back in 1984. They finished 4th in the Premier League and lost 2-1 both the times they faced Liverpool this season.
They were almost out of the tournament in the group stage itself, but a dramatic victory over Napoli in the last group match which saw them go through in a tiebreaker. Who can forget the dramatic 4-0 victory over Barcelona at Anfield which got them in this final.
If you think Liverpool’s journey is dramatic, then Tottenham has taken it to another level. Just like Liverpool Tottenham were also on their way out of the tournament before Lucas Moura scored an equalizer with 5 minutes to go at Camp Nou at Barcelona.
In their quarterfinal tie against a heavily favored Manchester City side, it was a last minute Llorente header which got them through. Moura, of course, would provide decisive in their semi-final tie against Ajax as it was his second-half hat-trick that got him through.
What could be expected in the match?
It a known fact that both the manager loves high pressing, and play a counter-attacking football with speedy forwards. Pochettino is more shape and style adaptive out of both the managers so its hard to expect what would be his playing eleven and on the other hand Liverpool are expected to start with their regular 4-3-3 formation.
Battel of managers:
Both the managers have a lot prove. Klopp has lost in six out of the seven major finals that he has competed in and has lost three out of three major finals for Liverpool hence Klopp would be desperate for a silverware and his first with the Liverpool.
One the other hand Pochettino has done the unthinkable by reaching the finals only. With no summer transfer signing club were given no chance to reach the finals. Pochettino would also be eager to get his hands on his first silverware.
For Tottenham the major concern is about the availability of striker Harry Kane before the final match, though he has returned to training and might start in the final.
For Liverpool the only major missing is going to be Nabi Keita.
The match takes place in Wanda Metropolitiano in Madrid at 7:00 pm GMT.
