“High tension and suspense” are words describing the drama behind Neymar’s spectacular Barcelona return. Though it is highly improbable now, this saga was the most enthralling one of this transfer window. With only three days remaining for the transfer window to end, will Barcelona produce a successful offer? Or will Neymar continue in PSG?
PSG had declined the initial offers from Barcelona which included a swap deal with Phillipe Coutinho (now in Bayern Munich on loan), Ivan Rakitic and €80 million. Barcelona made a series of offers since then, just to see them get turned down by PSG. The more recent offer, which PSG demanded, included Rakitic and Jean-Claire Todibo on a permanent basis and Ousmane Dembele on loan plus €130 million. Catalunya Radio, RAC1, and RMC all confirmed that Barcelona rejected PSG’s demands.
Neymar’s willingness to return
Neymar Jr. stated that he wanted to leave Paris and secure his move to Barcelona. He also put pressure on Barcelona to accept PSG’s demands. Thomas Tuchel, PSG’s coach has now left Neymar out of the squad for the first three league games.
Barcelona’s president Josep Maria Bartemeu briefly met with PSG chief Nasser El-Khelaifi at a UEFA meeting in Monaco. Before that Barcelona’s sporting director, Eric Abidal led the team that went to Paris to discuss the move. In spite of all these efforts, the talks have not progressed.
With the intent to return coming from Neymar and also the readiness that Barcelona showed to exchange it’s players for the transfer, Neymar’s return seemed possible. But now, with the deadline coming close, the possibility of Barcelona presenting an offer good enough to facilitate Neymar’s return is bleek. His future at PSG hangs in the balance.
