Champions League: All you need to know before the “Round of 16”

Wednesday saw the end of the group stage matches of the Champions League. After 6 match days, we finally have the top 16 left in the tournament. With the seedings now confirmed for the next round, we could be in for stellar matches in the round of 16 matches.

Teams like Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Paris Saint-Germain all finished at the top of their respective groups. Whereas teams like Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Tottenham Hotspur finished as group runner-up. In the round of 16 ties, the group runner-ups are drawn against the group winners. Also, teams from the same country cannot be drawn against each other. The group stage also saw last year’s semi-finalist Ajax knocked out.

Thirteen-time champion Real Madrid is in line for a tough draw. They can face teams such as Bayern Munich, Juventus, Liverpool, and Manchester City. Whereas, last season’s runner-up Tottenham Hotspurs also face a tough task ahead as the team could be in line to face other teams such as Barcelona, Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain.
