Last year, Illinois made headlines after legalizing adult-use cannabis. Yesterday, the state made a new record after its first day in sales of recreational cannabis. The turn out occurred through 37 legal dispensers, through a total of 77,128 transactions that gave $3.17 million in sales revenue, according to Toi Hutchinson, Illinois state Governor JB Prtiker’s senior advisor for cannabis control.
The amazing thing about that is that there’s a significant portion of these dollars that go directly into this community reinvestment fund, so we can continue to rebuild communities that have been hardest hit by the war on drugs.Toi Hutchinson
The Illinois Governor also pardoned 11,017 people for convictions in cannabis misdemeanor. Hundreds of people lined up outside dispensaries Wednesday morning. Similar situations occurred in other states during the first day of the sale of cannabis.
This is one of those moments where we recognize that the significance of yesterday was that it was the end of prohibition and the beginning of how we hope to grow a new industry here in Illinois and then teach other states how to do it.Toi Hutchinson
Illinois is the 11th state in the US to legalize recreational cannabis. There is a high chance that other states may soon adopt the same, and drop restrictive laws banning the use of cannabis for recreational purposes.
