Drinking water in U.S. cities are affected by toxic chemicals

Major cities in the United States like Miami, New Orleans, and Washington are affected due to the presence of unbreakable toxic chemical substances in the drinking water, according to the report from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

PFAS is believed to be in the bloodstreams of many American Citizens.

PFAS is the toxic chemical substances that are mostly found in the drinking water. It is short for perfluoroalkyl, and poly-fluoroalkyl which also include some chemicals known as PFOS, PFOA, and GenX. They are mostly found in the found now in nonstick products, paints, cleaning products, and food packaging.

PFAS is mostly used by the manufacturing industry in the early 1940s due to its ability to repel oil and water. The reckless release of these substances into the freshwater caused the drinking to get intoxicated with harmful chemicals.

Studies have shown that it can cause damages to the liver, kidney, thyroid, and may also lead to cancer. Recently, it has been proved that it causes severe damage to the reproductive system and also plays in role in high cholesterol. The EPA released a health advisory for PFOA and PFOS at 0.07 parts per billion in drinking water or 70 parts per trillion in the year 2016.

But in the year 2018, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry created awareness that the minimal risk levels for oral exposure to PFOS and PFOA should be 7 to 10 times lower than the suggested rate of EPA. Seattle, Memphis, and Tuscaloosa had less than 1 part per trillion PFAS according to the report. Other major metropolitans had exceeded that suggested levels.
