April 17, Friday: Keeping the present-day circumstances in view, the organizers of Comic-Con came up with a dismaying decision of calling off the 51st edition of San Diego Comic-Con. Comic-Con gets canceled for the first time in its 50-year-old journey. Although it’s quite disheartening for a comic enthusiast to accept this fact, desperate times call for desperate measures.
“The event will instead return to the San Diego Convention Centre from July 22-25, 2021,” the organizers asserted.
Here’s what the organizers feel about cancelling the convention
“Recognizing that countless attendees save and plan for conventions each year, and how man exhibitors and stakeholders rely upon its events for a major portion of their livelihood, (we) had hoped to delay this decision in anticipation that COVID-19 concerns might lessen by summer. Continuous monitoring of health advisories and recent statements by the Governor of California have made it clear that it would not be safe to move forward with plans this year,” the organizers expressed in a statement.
The organizers mentioned that the people who have purchased badges for the convention would be provided with an option to apply for a refund or transfer their badges to Comic-Con ’21. Likewise, the exhibitors are also eligible to claim a refund or transfer their payments to next year’s edition. “All 2020 badge holders (and exhibitors) will receive an email within the next week with instructions on how to request a refund,” said the organizers.
Consequences that follow
San Diego Comic-Con often referred to as SDCC, is one of the world’s largest annual comic and pop culture conventions that attracted over 130,000 people last year, marking its 50th anniversary. Its cancellation is a set-back to not only the comic shop owners and freelance artists, but also to the filmmakers and actors who won’t get to promote their upcoming movies and TV shows.
David Glanzer, a spokesperson for the organization, concluded, “Extraordinary times require extraordinary measures, and while we are saddened to take this action, we know it is the right decision. We eagerly look forward to the time when we can all meet again and share in the community we all love and enjoy.”
