AMC theaters is headquartered in Kansas and is the largest movie chain in the world. As retaliation what Jeff Shell stated, AMC theaters will no longer screen the Universal Studios’ movies.
What is the dispute about?
Jeff Shell, the CEO of NBCUniversal, stated that “as soon as the theatres reopen, we expect to release movies on both formats,” meaning some movies would continue with theatrical releases while the others will go to digital retailers or would stream through NBCUniversal’s personal channel, Peacock.
Shell made the comments in a Wall Street Journal story that reported the animated film to have had a profit of $95 million in digital rentals. This film was originally planned to be screened through theatrical release but due to the coronavirus pandemic and the shutdown of several movie studios, it was decided that the movie would be released digitally.
In reply to this, Adam Aron, the chairman and CEO of AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. and AMC Entertainment Inc., banned the release of films made by Universal in AMC theaters.
It is disappointing to us, but Jeff’s comments as to Universal’s unilateral actions and intentions have left us with no choice. herefore, effectively immediately AMC will no longer play any Universal movies in any of our theatres in the United States, Europe or the Middle East.Adam Aron writes in an open letter to Universal Studios
Trolls World Tour – what is it?
Trolls World Tour is an animated jukebox musical film, produced by Dreamworks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. This film, directed by Walt Dohrn, is a sequel to the 2016 world-class animation, Trolls.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the entertainment industry is going through a shocking period as it experiences severe problems related to revenue generation. It has been assessed that the movie’s success has come at a particularly difficult time for movie theatres. A major loss is being faced by AMC theaters as the revenue generation has fallen to the number 0.
