The feature-length documentary Becoming is about the first lady’s book tour in 2018 of the book of the same name. The book is one of her critically acclaimed and went on to win a Grammy award and become the year’s best-seller. The book is kind of a journal – an autobiography with a lot of memoirs and life guidance.
The documentary will be about Michelle’s 34-city book tour and encompassing the life around her. The official synopsis for the documentary says: “Becoming is an intimate look into the life of former First Lady Michelle Obama during a moment of profound change, not only for her personally but for the country she and her husband served over eight impactful years in the White House. The film offers a rare and up-close look at her life, taking viewers behind the scenes as she embarks on a 34-city tour that highlights the power of community to bridge our divides and the spirit of connection that comes when we openly and honestly share our stories.”
This is Nadia Hallgren’s directional debut. She’s worked as a cinematographer for sundance-nominated and oscar-nominated documentaries. “She’s a rare talent,” said the First Lady. “Someone whose intelligence and compassion for others comes through in every frame she shoots. Most importantly, she understands the meaning of community, the power of community, and her work is magically able to depict it.”
We’ve known the Obamas to be film-enthusiasts. Former President Barrack Obama is often known to be praising and discussing films and TV-series. He’s famously invited the creator of “The Wire” to the Whitehouse to have a serious discussion about the show. Not to mention, the couple owns a production company called Higher Ground, which produced the Oscar-winning documentary “American Factory,” which is also producing this documentary.
“Becoming” is set to be released worldwide by Netflix on May 6.
