Triple drug therapy helping COVID-19 patients, Hong Kong study reveals

While many drugs are on a roll to fight off COVID-19, no drug is proven to be effective against the disease. However, a new combination of drugs is proven to help COVID-19 patients quickly recover from the disease. The study carried out in Hong Kong says that a combination of three drugs is helping to fight COVID-19 in patients.

The effective combination contains anti-retroviral drugs Lopinavir and Ritonavir, along with the general antiviral drug Ribavirin and Beta-interferon. Patients underwent the treatment after seven days from testing positive. While some patients had only the retroviral combination, others went through the combination. The researchers found that patients who took the combination recovered within a flash period of 7 days, whereas patients who took the retroviral combination took 12 days to recover. The results turned out very good as it was helping patients to recover at a faster rate, but physicians add that this study may need further trials to confirm it’s effectiveness. Physio Xmas published the results of the study in The Lancet.

The future

Although the drug was effective in reducing symptoms as early as four days, we see that it also comes with side effects – some of which include nausea and diarrhea. While drugs like remdesivir are running on a shortage across many countries, it’s high time we need alternative drugs, and otherwise to tackle the virus, and this triple drug antiviral combination can be one such replacement therapy. Given its easy availability and lesser side effects with an effective combination, we can clearly see this combination can soon come up for treating the disease in no time. Further studies on large scales will explore the fullest possibilities of this combination.
