The World Health Organization has warned that the COVID-19 pandemic may never go away. In a briefing, WHO emergency director Dr. Mike Ryan said it was definitely difficult to say when the pandemic will end. He also added that even if a vaccine is found, it will take massive efforts to control the pandemic. With more than 300,000 deaths worldwide, the pandemic will still grow and affect more people worldwide. While focusing on the pandemic, the UN also urged counties to keep a note on the mental health issues reading in the country. This is especially important in countries that lack funding towards mental health.
The WHO also added that the virus can continue to stay in our communities and may never go away. For example, we can see HIV present our communities persistingly and we have come to terms with the disease, accepting that it is not easy to eradicate. We see that currently there more than 100 vaccine candidates on the roll to combat the virus. But Dr. Mike Ryan adds that even with a vaccine, disease like measles is not eliminated. Therefore, experts say this will need time and earnest effort to control the pandemic. WHO’s director-general also added that with the current trajectory, it’s everyone’s business to contribute to stopping the pandemic.
These remarks come during the point where countries are considering to ease the lockdown restrictions, while leaders urging to reopen their economies. The WHO director-general also said this might also trigger a second round of infection in countries. While countries are trying to get out of the disease, WHO recommends that any country should alert at the highest level. The director-general also warns that hopes these counties having on easing the lockdown can easily go the other way. All we need to do is follow the essential guidelines so that we can protect ourselves and protect others from the disease.
