Beyoncé: Facts about the singer-songwriter you didn’t know

1. She has mixed ancestry.

Beyoncé’s father, Mathew Knowles, is of African-American heritage and was born in Houston, Texas. Her mother, Tina Knowles, was born in Galveston, Texas, and boasts a creole heritage, including African, Native American, Irish, and French ancestry in her family.

3. She met her “Destiny” when she was just a kid.

4. The name Destiny’s Child is derived from a passage in the Book of Isaiah.

She said that “When I was 12, 13 I had my first boyfriend, and he was my boyfriend till I was 17. At that age, that was a long time. I’ve always been very loyal and a little more mature. Though I was too young for it to really be a boyfriend – we didn’t live together, we didn’t, you know… That was my only experience with a guy, and since then I’ve only had one other boyfriend in my life – Jay.”

8. There’s a fly named after her.

In 2012 research scientist  Bryan Lessard found a new species of horsefly in Northern Queensland, Australia, and named it “Scaptia beyonceae,” because of unique golden hairs on the fly’s abdomen. Researchers call the specimen the “all-time diva of flies.”
