On Tuesday, the Mississippi governor Tate Reeves signed a bill in order to eliminate the state flag that included the Confederate battle emblem. The confederate battle emblem is believed to be a racist symbol and has encouraged diversion since years. The flag is 126 years old.
The governor made it clear that this was not a political move. Instead, this would be a happy historic moment. This moment characterizes unity within the families and peaceful reunion. He continued, “We are a resilient people defined by our hospitality. We are a people of great faith. Now, more than ever, we must lean on that faith, put our divisions behind us, and unite for a greater good.”
The emblem was voted to be removed by the Mississippi legislature on Sunday. This voting was the last of its kind to exhibit the battle emblem. The bill received a majority of 91-23 in the House and the 37-14 in the Senate. The black lawmakers have gone through quite an emotional trauma because of this. Their principal argument was that the flag cannot represent a state comprising of a 38% black population. As the world gathers up against the discrimination towards the black, this comes in addition to the same.
In 2001, amidst the statewide referendum, voters chose to retain the flag by a difference of 2 votes. However, the rising protests due to George Floyd’s death strengthened the emotions of the voters. The Southeastern Conference menaced the state that it will pull all the championship events if it didn’t change the flag. On Thursday, the change of flag was supported by 55%.
The New Flag
In another speech, the governor said that he did not quite agree with the elimination of statues. However, there was an evident need to find a different banner, which might be a better option for Mississippi. In addition, he said that the monuments are enough to honor and remember the past. The flag should, however, be an emblem of our present. Therefore, the people of Mississippi need a new flag symbol.
As per legislation, the old flag cannot be an option when choosing a new flag. The residents of the state will head to polls to choose a new state flag.
