Zoom announces $599 27-inch videoconference device called ‘Zoom For Home’

Zoom is now a household name, after becoming the most popular video conferencing solution for education, business, and personal use after countries began to lockdown to avoid the spread of the pandemic earlier this year. After seeing wild success by providing an essential service to millions of homes, Zoom is now expanding into the hardware space. The company has partnered with video conferencing device manufacturer DTEN to announce the “Zoom For Home — DTEN ME.”

What is the Zoom For Home — DTEN ME?

The DTEN ME is a table-top videoconferencing device with a 27-inch touchscreen and 3 “intelligent” wide angle cameras. The device is also equipped with an 8-microphone array (for picking up and removing white noise) and is also powered by Zoom. That means you can use the device with Zoom’s whiteboard feature using the DTEN ME’s touchscreen.

The UI of the DTEN ME is very similar to what we are used to seeing in Zoom on our laptops. According to TechCrunch, the device can also be used to pair via ultrasonic to your phone/laptop. This is actually a security feature that even popular ride-share apps use, to make sure that you are getting into the right cab.

Is the Zoom For Home — DTEN ME worth it? Yes, and here’s why. For casual use, Zoom on our laptops seems like it’s more than enough. However, educators and businesses really require the use of Zoom’s whiteboard feature and a high-quality camera set up. It is not cheap or convenient to purchase separate cameras and use software like Ecamm Live to get everything connected and working together. Educators with a laptop will not find it easy to use the whiteboard with a mouse.
