Emirates will cover medical expenses for passengers who catch COVID-19

With the ongoing pandemic, most people are avoiding any kind of unnecessary travel. With not many people traveling, the two industries that have incurred significant losses are travel and tourism industries. Most people don’t want to travel due to fear of catching the coronavirus, and on the other hand, airlines and other modes of travel are doing their best to follow all kinds of precautions to gain the trust of the passengers again.

In this process, Emirates Airlines, the United Arab Emirates flag carrier, has become the world’s first airline to offer to cover customers’ medical expenses and quarantine costs if they contract COVID-19 during their trip.

The airlines will cover medical expenses of up to $173,000, and quarantine costs up to $116 for 14 days if the passenger is diagnosed with COVID-19 while they are on their trip. The cover will be available to all customers, free of any kind of extra costs, from now until October 31, 2020. It’s valid for 31 days from the moment they fly the first leg of their trip.

“Emirates has worked hard to put in place measures at every step of the customer journey to mitigate risk of infection, and we have also revamped our booking policies to offer flexibility. We are now taking it to the next level, by being the first in the industry to offer our customers free global cover for Covid-19 medical expenses and quarantine costs should they incur these costs during their travel,” Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emirates group chairman, and chief executive said in a press release.

Even though Emirates is the first airline to do this, a few tourist nations had already offered these kinds of offers to travelers visiting their countries. Emirates, being one of the top airlines, by taking this kind of aggressive decision to gain the trust of the customers back, will definitely affect other airlines. To be competitive in the market, other companies also will start to offer similar deals or think of something more innovative to promote their airlines.
