Officials claim many mysterious packages of seeds are being sent to people all across different states and asked everyone not to plant them. Although the source of the packages is unknown, officials strongly believe its China as they have Chinese characters printed on them.
It’s still unclear who is sending these packages, why they are being distributed, and whether the seeds are harmful. The department immediately asked anyone who has received this type of packaging in the mail to contact the Office of Plant Industry Services.
Some people who received packages said that the packaging claimed that there would be jewelry inside, which turned out to seed. Officials asked everyone not to open if they got any of these mysterious items as the packaging could help them investigate them better.
Officials claim that if these seeds turn out to be invasive species, they would have a massive effect on the environment.
“Invasive species wreak havoc on the environment, displace or destroy native plants and insects and severely damage crops. Taking steps to prevent their introduction is the most effective method of reducing both the risk of invasive species infestations and the cost to control and mitigate those infestations,” the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said in a news release on July 24.
