Trump has clearly told the reporters that TikTok is going to be banned in the US. The Chinese video making app has been under scrutiny for some time now over data privacy issues. The USA believes that the app is collecting and sharing data with the Chinese government.
“As far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the United States,” the President told reporters Friday night. When reporters asked about when this would happen, he said, “Soon, immediately. I mean essentially immediately. I will sign the document tomorrow.”
This would have definitely upset Microsoft as they were reportedly trying to buy out TikTok. While addressing this issue, the President said, “it’s not the deal that you have been hearing about, that they are going to buy and sell, and this and that. And Microsoft and another one. We’re not an M&A company.”
A White House adviser Peter Navarro said earlier in July that “If TikTok separates as an American company, that doesn’t help us, because it’s going to be worse — we’re going to have to give China billions of dollars for the privilege of having TikTok operate on US soil.”
“TikTok US user data is stored in the US, with strict controls on employee access, TikTok’s biggest investors come from the US We are committed to protecting our users’ privacy and safety,” a company spokeswoman said in a statement to address the issue regarding the claims that TikTok is sharing the users’ data with the Chinese government.
The USA will not be the first country to ban this app as India has already banned it over a similar issue. This will be a massive blow for TikTok to get banned in two of the major countries in months. It is still unclear how the White House is going to ban the app as something like it has never happened before. The US could just remove the apps from major app stores, but this would not be very effective and would encourage users to download the software. The US could build something similar to China’s Great Firewall, but again this would take a lot of time legal issues would also arise. By all means, it would be implausible that the White House would completely ban the app with a day, as the President said.
