Misinformed vaccine beliefs shaping policy views

Currently, the world is on its race to solve the pandemic situation by bringing out vaccines. One the one hand, we are trying to make the situation normal by getting such vaccines with Policymakers, and people are even urging towards pro-vaccination. On the other hand, we see that 20 percent of the population is misinformed about vaccination policies and is prone to skip vaccinations. Such misinformed beliefs lay a strong opposition against government health policies and can shape future policies too. These stats come out after the study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania and was published in the American Journal of Public Health.

The study

The study was based on 1,938 US respondents conducted by the Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC) panel during one of the largest males outbreaks last year. Overall the researchers found that people have strong support for pro-vaccination policies in the United States. It is seen that 72 percent of the people support mandatory childhood vaccination, 66 percent oppose personal beliefs of exemption and 60 percent opposed religious exemptions. One of the expert authors adds that well above 50 percent of the Americans support mandatory vaccination and oppose religious and personal beliefs. He still adds that we need stronger consensus towards vaccinations and achieves community immunity.

The overall study was conducted during the two waves of the disease last year one in early February and another one in the late September period. These results were obtained based on the misbeliefs of vaccines which is commonly present in making the people. We should also see that there was a previous study conducted by the same APPC which showed that people using social media are common to be victimized by this misinformation. These ideologies can drive policymakers to shift the vaccination policy. Not just measles we also previously saw how misinformation is taking lives during this pandemic. It’s high time now that people should understand the earnestness of the situation. Such an understanding will help all the children and people getting vaccinated leading to a healthier community.
