Warriors control the NBA draft in spite of finishing second

Golden State Warriors finished at the second position in the NBA draft lottery last Thursday. Minnesota Timberwolves emerged as the winners of the lottery results. However, there is a feeling that the Warriors still control the board as much as anyone.

General Manager Bob Myers did not reveal who was at the top of his list after getting No.2 draft pick. He said there is not much he knows as there are no face-to-face interviews or medical files available. Moreover, there is no salary cap that is available for him to evaluate how much room he’ll have to work with. There is so much uncertainty in the current times.

Warriors financially committed to winning title

Golden State Warriors are financially capable to be the winners in these challenging times. Myers said that “I’m lucky to work for some guys that have been in the tax a few times, and I’ve spent a lot of time. We’ve always had a high payroll. But our players have performed and produced for us.” He said that their players have always prioritized winning over making money. And he thinks that will never change. “Now, who knows what the economics look like? I don’t. Nobody does. But we want to win,” Myers said during Zoom conference with media.

Myers know that they have to utilize the remainder of Steph Curry’s prime as he turned 32 this year. Curry has been their face of the NBA for the last half-decade. Moreover, they have made a huge financial commitment with Curry by spending $85 million over the next two seasons. They have committed $155 million and $99 million over the next four seasons to Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, respectively. This clearly shows that they have every intention to win the championship.

Myer’s view on established players and their competition

Myers is likely to hear from his established players, and he is fine with that. “Those guys, I feel like they’ve earned a right to say whatever they want, and I’ve also earned the right to listen and do what we think is right, too, and it’s a mutual respect,” He said that these guys have won three championships for Warriors and they deserve the right to say.

Myers has a firm grasp of how the league has changed since Warrior’s dynasty started. “Just to watch what’s going on in the playoffs, it’s different than last year’s playoffs. Next year’s playoffs are going to be different than this year’s,” he said. He also said that he wants to have the best chance of understanding the league and Warrior’s competition. Myers knows that it will be difficult for Warriors to keep up with LA Lakers or LA Clippers. This makes it harder for them against teams like Denver Nuggets and Houston Rockets.

It seems that Myers has to be proactive in his approach if the Golden State Warriors have to make an impact in the championship. What are the chances that the Golden State Warriors wins the title? Let us know in the comment section.
