South Korea: 10 facts about the Asian country you didn’t know

1. It’s heaven for tech junkies.

The country was judged to have the world’s fastest internet connection speed for the 12th consecutive quarter. More than 90% of the population has access to the internet and is also known as the mecca of eSports.

2. North Korea and South Korea are still at war.

The ‘de-militarized’ zone between North and South Korea is the world’s most militarized zone.

3. People often want to move to South Korea from North Korea.

In the last 60 years, over 23,000 North Koreans have defected to South Korea. Only two South Koreans have gone to the North.

4. It is home to one of the world’s best airports.

Incheon International Airport was named the world’s best several times. The most crowded flight path on Earth is found in South Korea. It is the 280-mile hop from Seoul to Jeju International.

5. They are the largest drinkers in Asia.

According to the World Health Organization, South Koreans consume an average of 12.3L of alcohol per year and are ranked 17 in the world and first in Asia.

6. Plastic surgery is very common.

A quarter of the Korean’s had plastic surgery before. Korea is obsessed with looks. You’ll notice when you visit; people care a lot. It is a popular destination for medical tourism, specifically cosmetic surgery. 

7. Koreans are always a year older than you.

The difference is that in Korea, everyone is already one year old at birth.

8. Internet Explorer is pretty popular here.

It is a law in South Korea that online banking and shopping must be done through Internet Explorer.

9. Both men and women are obsessed with makeup.

 Some men wear significantly more makeup than women in South Korea.

10. The Korean entertainment industry is becoming one of the biggest in the world.

Whether K-Pop or Korean dramas or Korean beauty, everything is taking off now and is very popular. With a Korean film Parasite winning the Oscar this year, their popularity will not go down any time soon.
