The most common form of arthritis worldwide is named as osteoarthritis. Over 300 million people are getting affected because of this condition. The symptoms of this condition include significant pain, practical limitations, and defect in patients.
The intensity of pain in the knees during osteoarthritis varies over a period of time. Initially, people experience primarily weight-bearing related pain. This pain especially happens while jogging and climbing the stairs. The pain becomes more severe and shoots up immediately after some time.
Why this pain experience during Osteoarthritis?
Researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine studied the change in the pain occurs. Public Health also helped to review data from the Multicenter Osteoarthritis study about the painful experiences. They selected around 2794 older people with the risk of osteoarthritis. They concluded that people with a sense of more pain likely to suffer more unpredictable pain. This study also helps them to identify the potential underlying mechanism in the nervous system. This mechanism holds the responsibility for why people experience varying pain patterns with knee osteoarthritis.
“Our findings support the clinical relevance of neurobiological mechanisms that affect the pain experience in knee osteoarthritis. This includes not only the severity of pain, but whether the pain is intermittent or constant, and whether the pain is unpredictable”. Said Senior author Tuhina Neogi. He was also a professor of medicine and epidemiology at Boston University School of Medicine.
“By understanding these mechanisms, determining ways to identify those mechanisms in the clinic, and developing treatments to target those mechanisms. We can provide better management options to the millions of people worldwide with osteoarthritis. Dr. Tuhina Neogi added.
Pain management can be personalized and provided to patients by healthcare providers. If patients experience pain, therapies can alter the nervous system. If we continue the same treatment, then it would improve the pain over.
