US OPEN: Victoria Azarenka surprised Serena Williams with a 3-set thriller win against the American legend in the semi-finals of the US Open. Victoria won the match 1-6,6-3,6-3 against Serena. Having 23 Grand Slam singles titles to her name, Serena dreamt of leveling Margaret Court’s record of 24 titles, but Azarenka stood between Serena and her dream.
Serena started the match with a rush, thrashing Azarenka 6-1 to claim the first set. It felt that the match would get finished in no time, and Serena would move into the finals scheduled to play this Saturday. But Azarenka had other plans. After winning the match, she said, “I knew it is not over until I have another chance.” After losing the first set, she had to win both of the remaining sets to take the match home, and she did exactly the same. She broke Serena’s 3rd serve of the second set to gain a 3-2 lead and then broke one more service to win the set 6-3.

With the frustration building in, Serena made ten unforced errors, which took the match further away from her. 3rd seed Serena found it hard in the last set to face unseeded Azarenka as Azarenka took a dig at Serena with some explosive power-hitting to seal the set 6-3, thereby winning the match and reserving a spot against Naomi Osaka in the Finals. This is the first time Azarenka gained the upper hand over Serena out of the seven encounters in the Grand Slams. Earlier to this match, Serena had a clear 6-0 head to head record against Azarenka, but the two-time Australian Open champion was in no mood to surrender to the 23 time GrandSlam champion.
