COVID-19 is creating problems in pregnancy stages, such as preterm deliveries, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a report last Wednesday. Miscarriages and stillbirths in patients also diagnosed with COVID-19 patients.
The researchers selected and studied around 600 pregnant patients who tested COVID-19 positive between March and Mid-August. Among the 445 births during the study, 12.6% of were preterm deliveries. That is more than 25% higher than the rate of preterm delivery in the U.S population. Preterm deliveries were three times more common in symptomatic patients than the asymptomatic ones.
Miscarriages and stillbirths were experienced by ten patients. After 140 days, five pregnancy losses also occurred. As per the new study, more than half of the patients had no symptoms of the illness at the time of admission. In the case of symptomatic patients, 16.2% of cases needed treatment in an intensive care unit and 8.5% of cases required the help of ventilators. Unfortunately, two patients also passed away.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) is one of the nation’s leading medical professional groups. They told CBS News that it was already reviewed in the latest report. Christopher Zahn, ACOG’s vice president of practice activities, said this in an emailed statement. “The pandemic continues as a rapidly evolving situation,” Zahn said suggesting the public to take extra precautions. This includes “handwashing, social distancing, and wearing a mask.”
Doctors had very little knowledge about the risks of COVID-19 on pregnant people when the coronavirus initially hit the USA. CDC released guidance about these risks on last July. In that report, researchers noted that “pregnancy was associated with hospitalization and increased risk for intensive care unit admission, and receipt of mechanical ventilation, but not with death.”
