Dubai: DC start the tournament on a good note as they defeat KXIP in the super over in their 1st match of the season. Powered by Iyer’s 39(32) and Stoinis’s quickfire 53 off just 21, DC posted a par total of 157 runs on the board. And Punjab scored as many runs in as many overs as Mayank stood tall with 89 runs to his name.
Middle Order fights for DC to post a competitive total
KXIP captain, Rahul won the toss and rightly chose to bowl first as he is aware that the dew factor might come into play late in the 2nd innings. Shami didn’t disappoint his captain as he got better off Shaw and Hetmeyer in the powerplay, before which Dhawan got run-out due to miscommunication. Pant and Iyer’s pair tried to steady the ship with 50+ partnership. But when everything was going well and good, Bishnoi got Pant bowled, and Shami removed Iyer in the very next over to shift the match towards Punjab.
When fans were expecting around 130 runs from DC, Stoinis cameo powered DC to a total of 157 runs as he hit Jordan all around the park for 30 runs in the last over. Shami was the pick of the bowlers with 4/15 from his four overs.
Mayank – Backbone of KXIP batting
Chasing a par score, KXIP fumbled after Rahul was dismissed for 21 runs by Mohit Sharma as they lost the next 3 wickets in very quick succession as the scorecard read 35/4 from 30/0 within a span of 2 overs. Mayank made sure that their team didn’t lose one more wicket as he played cautiously along with Sarfaraz Khan. But tables turned around as Axar foxed Sarfaraz for 12 runs. But Mayank kept the scoreboard ticking with Gowtham and Jordan at the other end.
While KXIP needed 13 off the final over, Iyer looked at their batting hero Stoinis to turn the match into their favor. Mayank has hit the first ball out of the park, but Stoinis remained calm as he picked two wickets of the last 2 balls to take the match to super over.
Rahul, Pooran and Maxwell were named as batters while Rabad had the ball in hand.
- 1st ball: 2 runs – Rahul
- 2nd ball: Out – Rabada removes Rahul
- 3rd ball: OUt – Rabada removes Pooran
KXIP are all out for 2 runs and DC need just 3 runs to seal off the victory
Pant and Iyer came out to bat and Shami was handed the ball to defend 3 runs
