Abu Dhabi: Coming into the match with a loss against CSK, MI had the pressure to win this match as a defeat in this match not only obstructs them from climbing up the points table but also worsens their NRR which affects their place in the points table in a bigger picture. KKR, on the other hand, were pressure-free as this is their first match of the season
RO – ‘HITMAN’ show at Abu Dhabi
Rohit lost the second toss in a row this IPL and once again MI was invited to bat first. Unlike the last match, De cock didn’t last long as he lifted one up into the evening sky only to be taken by Nikhil Naik at the silly point. Mavi got better off De Cock with a good length delivery and ended up bowling a maiden that over. In-form Surya Kumar joined hands with Captain Rohit to hit KKR bowlers all around the park. Yadav started his innings by hitting four 4s off Warrier’s 2nd over. On the other hand, Rohit kept picking the short balls and dispatched them to the boundary ropes. Dealing in boundaries at regular intervals, the Rohit-Yadav pair stitched a valuable partnership of 90 runs in less than 10 overs after which Narine ran out Yadav with some brilliant fielding during his over.
Cummins, 15Crore+ buy for KKR didn’t prove his worth for the team as he leaked runs at more than 16 runs an over. With Rohit on the song and PPP(Pollard and the Pandya Brothers) yet to arrive at the crease, a 220-240 score was on the cards but Narine and Mavi restricted MI batsmen with disciplined bowling. KKR, playing their first match of the season seemed rustic in the initial overs but over the course of the match, they improved themselves to restrict MI to less than 200 runs.
Although Kuldeep has done well in his first spell, Rohit launched 2 sixers off his 3rd over to complete his 200th six in the Dream 11 IPL and his 50 run-mark followed the milestone. After Rohit got dismissed in the 19th over, new batsmen couldn’t get going as Russel and Mavi bowled tight lines to the batsmen. MI has managed to score 195 runs at a loss of 5 wickets.
Lethal MI bowling attack rattles KKR batting line up
Defending a monumental 195 runs at one of the biggest grounds in the world, Boult gave an impressive start to MI as he started the innings with a maiden. This was the 2nd maiden of the match with Mavi bowling the first one. He then dismissed Gill in his second over with a beautiful short-pitched delivery. Pattinson, who shared the new ball alongside Boult, also didn’t go wicketless as he removed Narine by getting an edge out of feather to De Cock. KKR just managed 33 runs out of the power play contrast to Mumbai’s 59.
Karthik and Rana have managed to stop the wicket fall for a few overs but their batting couldn’t stop RRR from climbing the mountain. The pressure kept building and both the batsmen succumbed to the pressure and got perished.
In came the brutal pair of Morgan and Russell to chase ‘next to impossible’ 98 runs in 30 balls. But there was nothing to worry for MI fans as Bumrah removed both Morgan and Russell in the same over. In the very next over, Boult sent Naik back to hut with a sharp bouncer. With no specialist batsman remaining, it was just a formality for the match to finish.
But Cummins had other plans. He thrashed Bumrah for 4 sixers in his next but Pattinson ended Cummin’s fun with a length delivery. Cummin’s effort only served to decrease the margin of defeat. Rahul Chahar bowled the last over defending 53 runs off it conceding just 4 runs and getting Mavi stumped on the last ball. MI won the match by a margin of 49 runs and this would boost their NRR greatly.
Rohith was awarded Man of the Match for his match-winning performance for the side.
- Rohit Sharma has hit 200th Six in Dream 11 IPL, becoming only the fourth batsmen and 2nd Indian to do so
