Dubai: KXIP and MI, sitting at 5th and 6th places respectively, with a win out of 3 matches, faced off to bag a second win to move up in the points table. Rohit(70) anchored the innings and fireworks from Hardik(30 off 11) and Pollard(47 off 20) took MI to 191 runs in 20 overs. And KXIP managed only __ in the reply to MI’s mammoth 191 after scoring just 87 runs off first 14 overs.
HITMAN crosses the 5000 run-mark in Dream11 IPL
KXIP captain Rahul won the toss and chose to bowl first and later Rohit told that they preferred to bat first. In walked the seasoned Rohit-QDK pair but QDK didn’t last long as Cottrell opened him up for a duck in the very first over. SKY and Rohit tried to stabilize the innings but fortune laughed at them as SKY was run out for the 2nd time this edition, with Rohit being his partner on both the occasions. Previous match hero Ishan Kishan came in after Yadav’s dismissal but couldn’t free his arms as Punjab’s bowlers showed discipline with their bowling. After a struggling 28 off 32, Gowtham removed IK with a catch at deep mid-wicket before which he had stitched a 50+ partnership with his captain.
Keeping in mind the Pollard’s heroics in the last match, he was promoted up the order to increase the scoring rate which was below par when Pollard entered the crease. KXIP had complete control over the match as the scorecard read 87/4 after 14 overs. The destruction that followed in the next 6 overs was just next to any of the KXIP fans as Mi went on to score 100+ runs from the last 6 overs out of which 25 came off the final over.
Rohit marked the inauguration for the assault by hitting Neesham at will to get 22 runs off the 16th over with the help of pair of sixes and fours before which the Pollard-Rohit pair hit Bishnoi for 15 runs in the 15th which had 2 sixers in it. Though Shami removed Rohit in his next over, thanks to some fielding brilliance from Maxwell but Rohit’s departure worked as a blessing in disguise for MI as the next batsman Hardik had much more fireworks than what his captain had in his bag for KXIP. Hardik and Pollard took the carnage to next level as this pair managed 67 run partnership in just 23 deliveries with six sixers and boundaries between them.
From a stage where MI would have taken 180 with both hands, they managed to get past the 190 run-mark. Cottrell was the lone fighter for Punjab with 1/20 from his 4 overs.
KXIP’s middle order fails to pick up the challenge
Punjab rode on Mayank and KL’s success in the initial matches but their failure exposed middle order too quickly to the pace-filled MI bowling attack. And KXIP’s middle order had no answers to the Chahar-Pandya duo as they completely failed to capitalize on the big ground advantage by rotating the strike.
Bumrah opened up Mayank with a beautiful inswinger and Nair played Krunal Pandya’s ball onto wickets to return back to the hut without troubling the scorer. After 6 overs, KXIP were 41/2 matching MI’s score at that point. But from then, both the innings headed in entirely different directions as Punjab failed to up the ante, credit to MI bowlers for picking wickets at regular intervals and exerting pressure on the batting unit by hitting right lines and lengths.
Pooran gave a ray of hope with his 44 run innings but Pattinson got better off him in the 14th over and from then it was just formalities to be completed by the Mumbai side to register a win. As expected, MI bowlers kept exerting pressure and picking wickets. Every bowler who bowled picket at least a wicket while Pattinson, Bumrah, and Chahar picked 2-a-piece. Bumrah was the most economic among his teammates as he conceded runs at just 4.5 economy rate. KXIP ended at 143 for the loss of 8 wickets and MI won by 48 runs. With this win, MI improved their NRR considerably and it might help them get the better bargain if the issue comes down to NRR for the place in the top 4 at the end of the league stage
