MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first. CSK was going bat first for the first time in this tournament. CSK made one change by bringing Chawla in for Jagadeesan, and SRH brought Nadeem in for Abhishek Sharma.
CSK, to everyone’s surprise, opened with Sam Curran instead of their regular opener Watson. Curran was playing well, but Sandeep Sharma got du Plessis out for a duck on the first ball of the third over. Sam Curran played well for his 31 runs before he got out in the fifth over to Sandeep again. CSK ended the powerplay scored 44runs for the loss of 2 wickets.
From there on, Watson and Rayudu had a good partnership and bought up 100 runs for CSK in the 14th over. Both were trying to accelerate and got on scores of 42 and 41, respectively.
Dhoni and Jadeja played reasonably well in the death overs considering the fact pitch was slowing down a bit. Even though Dhoni got out in the 19th over, Jadeja still was hitting the ball well, and with a few lusty blows in the final over, he made sure that CSK got to a good total of 167 onboard.
A Good Start for CSK
CSK bowlers contained SRH openers really well in the first three overs by conceding only 21 runs. In the fourth over, SRH lost two wickets, Sam Curran got Warner out Caught&Bowled, and Bravo got Manish Pandey with a direct-hit at the bowler’s end.
CSK were in control of the match at the end of the powerplay. They had conceded just 40 runs and picked up two crucial wickets.
The ball started spinning slightly, and CSK bowlers bowled lengths, and scoring boundaries was becoming extremely difficult for the SRH batsmen.
Williamson’s gritty Knock
Jadeja bowled Bairstow in the 10th over, and it was all up to Kane Williamson if SRH were to get close to winning the match. He played well, hitting boundaries at regular intervals but didn’t have enough support from the other batters.
Williamson got to his fifty but got out trying to hit a big one in the 18th over, and the match was almost out of their hand at that point.
Rashid Khan hit a couple of boundaries and bought some hope back, but the run rate required was slightly too much, and SRH eventually lost by a margin of 20 runs.
Ravindra Jadeja was awarded the Man of the Match award for his all-round performance.
