Just 4 matches into the knock-out stage, we see that 6 teams are fighting for the left-over 3 play-offs spots. This time, the qualification scenario will go down till the last league match. As SRH take on MI in a do-or-die match.
Let’s have a look at what each team needs to do in order to secure a playoff spot. And what needs to be done in their favor to enter the knock-out stage.
MI has already qualified for the play-offs and with a win over DC yesterday, they are assured tabletop position with no second thought or possibility. The least they want to do is not let the momentum drop right in front of the knockout stage and would be very keen on winning their next match against SRH.
ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGLORE
With 7 wins out of the first 10 matches, RCB needed just one more to get into the safe zone, but their performance has not been up to the mark as they suffered a hattrick of defeats lately and put themselves into a situation where they need to win their next match against DC or depend on other hosts of results to go their way to remain in the top 4.
If at all RCB lose to DC, they need to make sure that they don’t lose by a huge margin as it dents their NRR. And none of KKR, RR, and KXIP should win by bigger margins such that their NRR is better than RCB’s
Delhi faces a similar situation as that of RCB and needs to win against RCB to qualify straight away. Else they should note that they need to lose by a small margin and none of KKR, RR, and KXIP have huge wins. Given the negative NRR of DC, they might not be willing to take risks by losing the match to RCB.
KINGS XI PUNJAB
Coming out of nowhere, KXIP has done a great job to reach this stage. They lost 6 out of their first 7 and now are competing with 6 other teams for the play-offs.
The equation is pretty simple for KXIP. They need to win huge(by a margin of more than 150runs) against CSK to cross SRH’s NRR) or win against CSK normally and pray for MI’s win over SRH to ensure SRH stay behind them in points.
RAJASTHAN ROYALS & KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS
RR and KKR stand on the same road as they face each other in their last league match. Both have 12 points under their belt and both are suffering from negative NRR. Just a win here can’t guarantee then a play-offs spot. And they need to win by a huge margin and pray for SRH’s defeat.
Maintaining a healthy NRR, SRH just has one checkbox left to tick. If they succumb to MI, SRH can pack their bags but a win against MI in their last league match almost guarantees a playoff spot. The only way for them to sit below 4th position even after winning against MI is by them losing to MI by a huge margin and KXIP winning huge against CSK.
CHENNAI SUPER KINGS
CSK is already eliminated from play-offs and they are playing for pride. CSK is using these last leg of matches to test their bench strength. This helps them to evaluate the players and prepare better for next season. So, there is nothing much to work out for CSK.
