Abu Dhabi: CSK had nothing to lose while KXIP “had to” win this match in order t stay alive in the tournament. But KXIP failed to put up a show on D-Day as CSK outperformed them in all departments. Even luck didn’t favor KXIP. Initially, Ngidi(3/39) helped CSK restrict KXIP to below-par 153, and Gaikwad(62*) and Faf(48) ensured that Ngidi’s performance didn’t go in vain. CSK won the match by 9 wickets and with 7 balls to spare.
Ngidi all over KXIP
Dhoni won an important toss and chose to field first. KXIP weren’t really bad in the initial PP as they scored 53 runs off the first 6 overs losing only Mayank to Ngidi. Gayle struggled to get going as he batted with less than run-a-ball throughout the innings and finally succumbed to Tahir in the 12th over. Before Gayle’s dismissal, Rahul and Pooran were also sent back to the hut by Ngidi and Thakur respectively.
Mandeep didn’t last long as Jadeja cleaned him up for 14 runs. But Hooda didn’t give up. He kept fighting and scoring runs for his team. Hooda has hit boundaries at regular intervals and struck the ball very well. He scored at a 200+ strike rate. Though Neesham(2) disappointed, Hooda gave KXIP the much needed finishing touch as he helped his team cross the 150 run-mark. In the process, he completed his half-century and stood not out on 60 at the end of the innings. KXIP finished at 153 in their 20 overs.
Faf and Gaikwad wins the match for CSK
Chasing a par score of 153, CSK’s openers gave them a good start. They were never in a hurry and got into the job with ease. Openers looked very comfortable in the middle and none of KXIP’s bowlers could trouble them. Bowlers created a few half chances but they were not converted into wickets. A crucial difficult catch was also put down by a forward-diving fielder. 57 runs at the end of PP for the loss of no wickets eased the pressure on CSK.
Post-PP, CSK’s openers batted even more fluently and scored runs and boundaries at will. On 48, Jordan saw DuPlessis going back. Although it wasn’t too late for KXIP to sneak in, Rayudu didn’t offer the bowlers any chance. Meanwhile, Gaikwad kept ticking the scorecard and reached his 50 in the process. Gaikwad and Rayudu built an unbroken 70+ run partnership and handed CSK their 6th win of the tournament.
