Match 54 Nov 1: Morgan, Cummins help KKR knock Rajasthan out of IPL

Match 54 of the Indian Premier League was played between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Dubai. RR won the toss and elected to bowl first. RR did not make any changes to their side from their win against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the last game. KKR made two changes to their side after losing their match against Chennai Super Kings. Shivam Mavi and Andre Russell replaced Rinku Singh and Lockie Ferguson respectively.

KKR scores well in powerplay despite losing Rana’s wicket

RR started with Jofra Archer and Varun Aaron Holder against opening pair of Nitish Rana and Shubman Gill. Archer got rid of Nitish Rana in the first over with a great delivery. Despite losing Rana early, Rahul Tripathi and Gill kept a healthy run-rate in the powerplay overs. They played Jofra Archer cautiously while targeting other bowlers. Knight Riders scored 55 runs off first 6 overs at loss of only one wicket.

Royals struck in the middle overs but Russell and Morgan led KKR’s assault

Rahul Tewatia took wickets of Shubman Gill and Sunil Narine in the same over to reduce KKR to 74/3 in 9 overs. Shreyas Gopal got rid of well settled Rahul Tripathi in 12th over to make the scoreboard read 94/4. Dinesh Karthik got out on a golden duck which saw KKR reeling at 100/5 after the end of 13th over. However, Eoin Morgan 21 runs off the 14th over to give impetus to KKR’s score. Andre Russell started to look dangerous when he hit Kartik Tyagi for back-to-back sixes but perished on the next ball. However, Morgan’s 65 runs off 35 balls helped KKR set 192 for RR to win this match.

Pat Cummins destroyed Royals batting order

Ben Stokes and Robin Uthappa opened for RR while Pat Cummins bowled the first over. Uthappa and Stokes took Cummins apart on first 5 deliveries which yielded 19 runs. However, Cummins made a good comeback to take Robin’s wicket on the last ball. A great catch by Dinesh Karthik got the wicket of Ben Stokes. Cummins bowled out Steve Smith in the third over to reduce Rajasthan to score of 32/3. Shivam Mavi got the wicket of Sanju Samson while Cummins bounced out Riyan Parag. Rajasthan could only score 41 runs off the first 6 overs with half of their batting line-up back in the dug-out.

KKR won the match by 60 runs which helped boost their Net Run-Rate

Rahul Tewatia and Jos Butler tried to build a partnership and score quick runs in the middle overs. However, Varun Chakravarthy took the wicket of Butler in the 11th over to dent Rajasthan’s chances of pulling off a miracle. Rahul Tewatia losing his wicket in the 15th over was the final nail in the coffin for Royals. Royals could only manage 131 runs in the 20 overs and lost the match by 60 runs. This ended their journey in IPL 2020 where they ended on the 8th position. KKR, on the other hand, have a fair chance on qualifying for the play-offs if Sunrisers lose their final match. They can sneak past the loser of DC and RCB match as well provided one of them loses by at least 20 runs.
