An on-screen kiss in one of its series “A Suitable Boy” which is adapted from Indian award-winning novelist Vikram Seth’s novel of the same name is getting all the attention everywhere.
This is due to the fact that the scene shows a youthful Hindu woman being kissed by a Muslim man at a Hindu temple which caused a political uproar and controversy for Hindu nationalist politicians. On Sunday, one of the trending hashtags was #BoycottNetflix, and the same day Minister of Home Affairs, Madhya Pradesh tweeted that he has asked the police to look into this matter.
Also, BJP youth leader Gaurav Tiwari said in a conversation to the reporters that he has lodged a complaint against Netflix’s VP of Content of India and Director of PR. This accuses Netlfix of performing “deliberate or malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings.” Such offense in India could lead to prison time of three years, fine, or both of the options.
This retaliation comes after a month when a similar event happened where an Indian jewelry brand named Tanishq pulled their advertisement which showed a Muslim family with their Hindu daughter in law due to the fact that it faced severe reactions.
