Sydney: Australia defeats India with all-around performance here at SCG. Finch and Smith have hit tons and laid a strong foundation for a big score. Australia scored a mammoth 374, and in return, India managed only 308 in their 50 overs. Australia won the match by 66 runs.
Smith, Maxi capitalizes on Finch’s ton
Australia won the toss and chose to bat first. Warner and Finch gave a good start to the innings as the pair scored 60+ runs in the first Power Play. They continued their assault as Warner-Finch brought up 150 run partnership. Finally, Shami got Warner against the run of play for 69 runs. Then Smith joined Finch in the middle and continued the rampage.
Finch stood tall and composed to get to his 17th hundred. Smith started attacking from ball 1 as his strike rate never dropped below 120. Smith played well against all the bowlers as he hit them all around the park. Bumrah got Finch with a catch off Rahul and Chahal removed Stoinis for a first-ball duck. Maxwell, with not-so-good IPL form, turned the tables around as he smacked the ball 3 times out of the ground during his short stay of 19 balls. He amassed 45 runs at a 230+ strike rate. Shami was the pick of a lot with 3 wickets under his belt.
Dhawan, Pandya effort goes in vain
Chasing a huge 375, India got off to a good start as Mayank-Dhawan made 50+ runs inside the first 5 overs. But Hazlewood removed Mayank, Virat, and Iyer inside the PP with some sharp bouncers. Rahul gifted his wicket to Zampa for just 12 runs. Hardik joined Dhawan in the middle to reconstruct the innings. This pair slowly steadied the ship with a century stand and, in the process, got to their personal 50 marks.
India needed 180+ runs from the last 20 overs. With Dhawan and Hardik in the middle, the target looked well in reach, but when Zampa dismissed Dhawan and Hardik, India’s hopes went down. Jadeja’s 25 only helped reduce the difference. Hazlewood had 3 wickets while Zampa picked 4.
Smith was awarded Man of the Match for his quickfire 100, which helped Australia reach 374 runs.
