IPL Updates: BCCI had its 89th AGM meeting at Ahmedabad on the 24th of December. While 10 team-IPL had been the main agenda behind the meeting, the decision has been made official after it was approved by the AGM Board Members. Board Members, i.e., State Associations, had no obligations in expanding the tournament. So, we are gonna have an expanded IPL city map from 2022.
Initially, it was expected that IPL-14 would host ten teams, but due to a lack of time and resources to prepare for the 10-team tournament amidst the pandemic, two new teams will be on the circuit from 2022.
This means that IPL will have a regular auction before the 14th edition and a mega auction before the 2022 season so that the new two teams don’t fall too behind the other established teams.
Other key decisions made at the AGM
- Rajiv Shukla was elected as BCCI vice-president. The post was vacant since Mahim Verma’s exit early this year.
- BCCI is open to participating in LA 2028 Olympics but not willing to give up its autonomy to work under IOA(Indian Olympic Association). Officials are brainstorming on how to address the issue as they are yet to get to a final decision.
