The sensational British period crime drama “Peaky Blinders” created by Oscar-nominated director Steven Knight will wistfully be coming to an end. Its sixth season will be the final season. Although creator and writer Steven Knight has assured that the story will “continue in another form.”
The show, tells the story of Tommy. Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his infamous family’s rise to power against a backdrop of Birmingham’s working class, post-World War I.
BBC confirmed the show’s terminus on Monday. They also announced that it had resumed filming in the U.K. after being hit by Covid-related production delays.
Knight, in a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2019, said that “Peaky Blinders” would live to see season 7. However, due to a year’s delay in production, is likely to have accelerated plans to wrap with season 6.
The Shelby crime family universe likely to live on
Knight said in a statement on Monday: “‘ Peaky’ is back and with a bang. After the enforced production delay due to the Covid pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher. We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the T.V. series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”
As of now, there seems to be no clarity on how the show will “continue in another form,” but it’s likely the creative team is considering a movie or spin-off show. Knight had earlier revealed he had been “approached” to take the Shelby crime family universe to the big screen.
“Along with our wonderful, supportive partners at BBC and Netflix, we have been working diligently to ensure we can get ‘Peaky’ safely back into production; the safety of our cast and crew is always our priority. Thank you to all the ‘Peaky’ fans who have been so unwaveringly supportive and patient. Steve’s scripts are incredible and mark the end of an epic story that has entranced audiences since it first started in 2013, but the world of ‘Peaky Blinders’ will most definitely live on.” said executive producer Caryn Mandabach.
Season 6 will see Anthony Byrne return as director and Nick Goding produce. “Peaky Blinders” debuted in the U.K. back in 2013. The entire series became available to stream via Netflix. There’s currently no word on when the sixth and final season of “Peaky Blinders” will air.
