10 interesting facts about the Statue of Liberty that you never knew

1. The Statue of Liberty used to have a reddish-brown color.

The statue has an iron infrastructure and copper exterior, which has turned green due to oxidation.

5. The statue was completed in France in July 1884 and arrived in New York Harbor on June 17, 1885 onboard the French frigate “Isere.”

In transit, the statue was divided into 350 pieces and packed in 214 crates. When the pieces of this statue reached America, it took four months to re-assemble all the parts.

6. The statue’s original torch was replaced in 1984 by a new copper torch covered in 24k gold leaf.

7. There are seven rays on her crown, representing the seven continents of the world. 

The length of each ray is 9 feet and weighs around 150 pounds.

8. The Statue of Liberty was meant to be a lighthouse, but it proved to be useless as such.

9. The statue sustained minor damage in 1916 when German saboteurs set off an explosion during World War One. 

The stairs in the torch were then closed to the public for safety reasons and have remained closed ever since.

10. The statue’s head isn’t installed correctly.
