The Grammys, often called ‘music’s biggest night,’ is set to air in a few hours. However, The Recording Academy, the organization behind the Grammys, is being bashed by various artists for its partiality. It has gotten so severe to the point where singer, The Weeknd, is planning to boycott the event from this year onwards. The decision was made after the artist’s recent album and ground-breaking single, “Blinding Lights,” were not nominated in any category.
The selection committee for the Grammys had mentioned in last year’s award ceremony that the nominations were ‘more progressive’ and ‘more musically adventurous. This year’s nominations did not look like they had any ‘progress’ and many artists took to social media to show their dissatisfaction in this year’s nominations.
The Recording Academy has always been called out for not being transparent with its selection process and has caused disappointment and frustration in many Grammy-deserving artists. It looks like it is not going to stop any time soon. The Weeknd has had incredible staging and even more jaw-dropping records. The singer’s most popular song, ‘Blinding Lights’, was the first-ever song to chart in Billboard’s Hot 100 for an entire year. To add on, he even had the opportunity to perform in the Superbowl’s halftime show. Despite such huge achievements, the singer did not receive a single nomination.

The public got to know what the inside of the selection committee is actually like when Deborah Dugan was fired from her chief executive position in the committee. She had mentioned in an interview on NBC that she was ‘shocked by the level of sexism and corruption’ that she found at the Recording Academy. She also added that there was a layer of corruption, self-dealing, and sexism’ that had to go.
A Grammy award is one the highest recognition that an artist can receive. It is unacceptable, the fact that even the most-sought after award ceremony is rigged to such an extent. Let’s hope that in the years to come, the Recoding Academy comes to realize that good music is not something that is only enjoyed by the sexist and racist members of the committee but is also enjoyed by the general public.
