During a visit to BAE Systems, Boris Johnson discussed the third wave of COVID in the EU and the prospect of it transmitting across the channel.
The PM told reporters that it is inevitable that we will feel the effects of the third COVID wave “in due course” and that the UK is “getting on with our vaccination program as fast as we can”.
This announcement by the PM comes as the UK struggles to prevent the European Union from blocking exports of vaccines.
A delay in supply is already expected during the next month, but this new move would bring a grinding halt to one of the fastest inoculation programs in the world.
The government remains adamant that the contracts signed will be honoured, and some EU members disapprove of blocking exports, including Irish PM Michael Martin.
Steps to prevent this third wave
As the PM mentioned, the vaccination program continues in full force, with a record-breaking 750,000 vaccinated on Saturday (20th March).
There are also talks of all EU members being placed on the UK’s red travel list. Under these rules, very little travel can be made to and from those countries.
