Chennai: KKR won the toss and elected to bowl first as dew was expected to set in during the later part of the match. Though MI’s batting was never threatening, KKR had its nose slightly ahead after the first innings, courtesy Russell’s fifer. But tables were turned rather quickly as KKR failed to chase 31 off last 5 overs and handed 10-run victory to MI.
Death Over woes continue for MI
Being invited to bat first, MI lost de Kock early to Varun Chakravarthy. Rohit, Surya didn’t let the opposition get ahead of them. Surya’s counterattack was very effective as he pushed KKR into defensive mode in no time as he hit 3 boundaries off Harbhajan’s over. Pair made sure that boundaries flew in well at regular intervals. Even strike rotation was up to the mark; Not many dots were played during the partnership, especially by Rohit.
Mumbai lost Surya(56) and Ishan in successive overs in an attempt to up the ante. Rohit’s rather sedentary knock as he preferred to anchor the innings was curtained down by Cummins in 16th over with a beautiful off-cutter. Prasidh removed Hardik in 17th over. Russell gave a death blow to MI in the 18th over as he removed Pollard as well as Marco in the same over. Krunal has hit 2 boundaries off the first two balls of the final over but Russell had the last laugh as he removed Krunal, Bumrah and R Chahar to claim his first 5-fer against MI.
This was just second fifer against MI throughout IPL. Russell’s stats read 2-0-15-5. Cummins complemented him well with 2/24 from his 4 overs.
Chasing a below-par score of 153, with dew setting in, it looked like a cakewalk for KKR to win the match. Matching the expectations, Rana-Gill delivered with 72 run opening stand in 8.5 overs. Gill mistimed a ball straight to Pollard at long-off, and Pollard didn’t make any mistake. Chahar removed Rana too, in the 11th over. Fro that point, KKR’s innings was derailed. None of the batsmen applied themselves to save their team. MI was spot on with its bowling changes and splendid field placements. MI exerted pressure on Russell by bowling Chahar against him with Test Match field placements.
Tripathi(5), Morgan(7), Shakib(9), Karthik(8), Russell(9 off 15), no one could save KKR from losing the match from winning territory. At the 15 over mark, KKR needed just 31 runs from the last 5 overs with 6 wickets in hand. Krunal and Jasprit bowled well in tandem as they conceded only 16 runs off next four overs. KKR needed 15 runs off the last over. They still had hopes as DK and Russell were in the middle. Boult conceded 2 runs off the first 4 balls and removed Russell, Cummins. Then it was just a mere formality for MI.
Chahar’s 2/27, Krunal’s economic 1/13 helped Mumbai clinch the victory from the jaws of defeat. Bumrah(0/28), Boult(2/27) contributed their part to the victory.
