The sad demise of Chad President Idriss Deby results in his son being made the Interim President…

News of Chad’s President Idriss Deby sudden demise has completely come as a shock. He visited troops on the frontline of a fight against northern rebels, an army spokesman commented. As a result, Deby’s son, Mahamat Kaka, is said to become the interim President.

The cause of death is still a mystery. And, all measures have been taken to guarantee peace and republican order in the country. Mr Deby was accused of repressive rule by his opponents. He also pushed through a new constitution that would have allowed him to stay in power until 2033. Undoubtedly, he was one of Africa’s longest-ruling leaders.

He was dealing with his own set of problems like mounting discontent over his management of Chad’s oil wealth.

But not only this, France is going to face more problems now relating to its counter-terrorism operations in the capital. But it is yet to react officially. Even western countries have seen Deby as an ally in the fight against Islamist extremist groups.

It would be now interesting to note how will the politics of the region unfold.
