Mumbai: Both RR and KKR, coming from losses off their previous encounters, needed a win badly to gain momentum. But only one is going to get those 2 points and put a stride forward towards their goal. This time it was RR, with the all-round effort against the Knight Riders. Initially, they bowled well to put KKR under pressure and restricted them to 133 runs. Later, a good opening partnership and a sensible knock from skipper Samson(42 off 41) helped RR drop a winning punch.
Chris Morris star as RR restrict KKR to meager 133 runs
Samson won the toss and opted to bowl first. RR’s bowlers were too good for KKR openers as they struggled to score every run in the PP. KKR scored only 25 runs from the first 6 overs. Interestingly, Samson tried 6 different bowlers in the Power Play. But they got their first wicket in the form of a run-out as Jos Buttler caught Gill short of his crease. Tripathi(36 off 26) provided the much-needed impetus for KKR’s innings. Narine couldn’t make his mark with the bat while Morgan was run out without even facing a single ball.
Karthik was there in the middle for an extended period but couldn’t accelerate well as RR bowlers were disciplined. He was dismissed in the 18th over. A six from Cummins and a boundary by Mavi helped KKR cross the 130-run mark. Morris was the pick of the bowlers as he picked 4 wickets by conceding just 23 runs off his four overs.
A sensible batting approach help RR win the match
Target was not too high, but false shots might cost RR the match. Realizing this to a reasonable extent, RR was cautious in their approach. But they never backed away from playing their shots to exert pressure on the bowlers. They made sure that RRR was always under control. RR lost Buttler early, but Samson built valuable partnerships of 19, 45 with Jaiswal(22 off 17) and Dube(22 off 18), respectively. Tewatia mistimed a pull off Prasidh as he was dismissed for 5 runs. Miller(24 off 23) supported his captain well from the other end as RR pulled off the victory in the 19th over with 6 wickets to spare.
