Olympia Dukakis, the actress who was famously known for her Oscar-winning acting in the romantic comedy movie ‘Moonstruck’ has unfortunately passed on. She was 89.
It is said by Allison Levy, Dukakis’ agent at Innovative Artists, that the actress died in her New York City home on Saturday (1 May), although the reason behind her death was not released. Her brother, Apollo was first to release the news of her passing in a Facebook post saying, “My beloved sister, Olympia Dukakis, passed away this morning in New York City. After many months of failing health, she is finally at peace and with her Louis,” referring to Dukakis’ late husband, Louis Zorich, who died in 2018 when he was 93 years old.

The actress was born in Lowell, Mass., and pursued physical therapy at Boston University due to her parents’ opinion on wanting her to have practical education. She always had a passion for acting and drama, which then spurred her on to study drama in the same university where she had completed her Bachelor’s Degree.
Through many obstacles like stage fright and limited income, she emerged victorious when she was given the opportunity to act, starting with smaller roles in ‘The Aspern Papers’ on Broadway, to major roles in films after her Oscar-winning acting in ‘Moonstruck.’ She has inspired many individuals since then. The world has lost a role model. Rest in Peace.
