Since the coming of the pandemic, there has been a lot of debates and questions around the Covid-19 vaccines. One such debate is on the easing patent rules on Covid-19 vaccines that have gained momentum in the US. The Biden Administration has decided to ease the rules, but the move is preliminary.
US Trade Representative Katherine Tai wrote in a statement about the US’s strong commitment towards intellectual property protections, but due to pandemic, it supports the easing of the rules. The issue has been taken after various calls from the global advocacy groups. But countries, including the European Union and Switzerland, have resisted the step.
One of the administration’s major aims is to get safe and effective vaccines and expand their distribution. Although, there were divisions within the administration over supporting easing these patent restrictions.
Indeed, intellectual property rights are part of the problem associated with the vaccine supply and shortages, but a more serious problem lies in manufacturing.
The pandemic has ushered in a lot of problems worldwide. And, how things will play out is yet to be seen.
