After registering a historic victory in the Scottish Parliament with 64 seats, the Scottish National Party has promised to hold a second independence referendum. It has opened an opportunity for a clash with London. Pro-Independence parties control almost 72 of the parliament’s 129 seats.
Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon declared her priority of keeping the people safe from the pandemic but still, the party intends to ask for a second referendum. She also reiterated how this is the democratic wish of the Scottish people. Scotland has a 300-year-old union with England. Whereas, Prime Minister Boris Johnson, has refused the second referendum as the first referendum back in 2014 is considered the final call of the people.
The prospect of a second independence referendum has been on the table ever since the Brexit referendum, where 62% in Scotland wanted to be a part of the European Union. Sturgeon has insisted,” In this election, people have voted overwhelmingly for the SNP and we stood on a manifesto commitment to firstly… and to give the people of Scotland the opportunity to choose our own future in a referendum..”
Undoubtedly, this second referendum holds importance for the two nations especially after the Brexit and what would unfold in the future is yet to be seen.
